Sam’s Women: The Best Friend, Part II

When we left off in yesterday’s Part I post, Sam was trying to warn Diane that her old friend Heather was hitting on him: “Listen, sweetheart, I didn’t want to have to tell you this, because you’re pals and all that, but she’s coming onto me, gangbusters. And I’ll tell you something else. I need a little help here because I don’t have that much experience saying no to women. The closest I’ve ever gotten is: ‘Not now, we’re landing.'”

But Diane doesn’t believe him, so she invites them both over for dinner. But when Heather pulls out all the stops with her next outfit, Diane starts to falter.

Heather: “Well, what do you think about this dress? I just bought it today. I saw it and I just had to have it.”
Diane: “Why did you buy a dress today of all days? You come into the bar, you meet…everyone, and you go out and get a ‘come-get-me dress.’ Explain yourself.”

In the words of a man in the 80s, she looks like a stone cold fox:

s2samswomen1pt2

A few newer dresses and pumps that fit the bill:

s2samswomen1mod

1. Dagmar Majorelle Tunic Dress. 2. ASOS T-Shirt Dress with Embellished Shoulder Detail. 3. Corpus Acid Wash Sleeveless Shirtdress. 4. Helmut Lang Slack Drape Panel Dress. 5. Maison Martin Margiela Stacked Cyldiner-Heel Sandal. 10. Jason Wu Short Sleeve Dress in Moss Green.

And finally, the scene in which Diane loses her cool, thankfully captured and uploaded on YouTube by some other Cheers fanatic:

Here’s to Sam’s Women!

Sam’s Women: The Best Friend, Part I

In this installation of the Sam’s Women series, we focus on Season 2, Episode 11, in which Diane receives a visitor:

Diane: “Hello, everyone. This is Heather Landon, my oldest friend.”
Carla: “Meet her this morning?”
Diane (to Heather): “That’s Carla. She likes a little witty repartee, she just isn’t capable of it.”

They may have met in fourth grade, but Heather is grown woman by the time she walks into Cheers. And I mean grown. And she looks good.

s2samswomen1part2

Unfortunately, Sam notices. And Heather starts flirting…

Below are expensive and inexpensive modern versions of her day-to-evening outfit. Rag & Bone vs. Uniqlo, Kelly Wearstler’s vs. Topshop’s takes on cupro pants, and two nearly identical black ankle boots for two very different prices.

s2samswomen1part2mod

1. Rag & Bone Lund Pullover ($255). 2. Uniqlo Women Color Mixed Crew Neck Sweater ($30). 3. Kelly Wearstler Spear Color Blocked Cupro Pant ($295). 4. Topshop Cupro Soft Wide Leg Trousers ($90). 5. Sass & Bide Seven Ways Belt ($120). 6. Topshop Clean Faux Pony Metal Belt ($60). 7. Barneys New York Co-Op Short Platform Ankle Boot ($495). 8. Enzo Angiolini Yilin Ankle Boot ($140).

Stay tuned for Part II, when Heather and Sam land themselves in a bit of trouble. Coming tomorrow!

Cheers,

Chloe

S2E10: Diane’s DTR Outfit

In Episode 10 of Season 2, “How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Call You Back,” Sam and Diane dance circles around the eternal dating question: “What are we doing” aka “Where are we going?” aka “Do you love me?” (of course, it’s Diane’s idea to discuss it in the first place). In one of the rare times that we see Diane’s unbottoned side, if you will, Sam goes to Diane’s apartment to find her a few wine bottles deep.

Sam: “Wow! You’re drunk!”
Diane: “Wow! You’re stupid! I’ll be sober in the morning.”
Sam: “You’re upset about my not thinking about our relationship. I will start thinking about our relationship. Maybe we should take some time off, not see each other for a while. That way I’ll just have one thing on my mind the whole time.”
Diane: “That’s one more than you usually have.”

After pointing out his lack of intelligence a few more times, they decide to meet back up in a week and have the talk. The DTR (“Define the Relationship”), as my friends and I have always called it. Throughout the episode Diane wears a few short-sleeve knit sweaters.

10dianemod1

Of course, Sam mucks the whole thing up because he keeps choking on the word “love.” If you’ve dated a dude in San Francisco, this might sound familiar:

Sam: “Obviously the only reason that I’m with you is that I luh–”
Diane: “What, Sam?”
Sam: “I said the reason that I’m with you is that I luh.”
Diane: “You luh?”
Sam: “You know what I mean.”
Diane: “Well what’s the matter? Can’t you say it?”
Sam: “Of course I can. I luh–I luh–I luh.”

But of course it ends wtih a Carla Tortelli gem.

Diane, gushing: “Hey everybody! Sam can’t say he loves me!”
Carla: “Who can?”

Just go watch it on Netflix already. Here is Dian’es wonderfully un-Diane outfit: chunky sweater, grey pleated bomber jacket, and drawstring pants. So good.

S2E8: Diane, Kimono Top

Damn, I miss Carla. But unfortunately, Season 2 is primarily centered around the relationship between Sam and Diane. So, we get more of Diane. More pastels, more lace, more priggish high-neck sweaters, more boring shin-length skirts. But once in a while she finds a little sartorial backbone. As with this kimono sleeve sweater and oversized pendant.

s2e8dianeblueold

Once again, we find that even Diane, in 1983, could pass for a modern woman. As evidenced by Zara and Bottica:

s2e8dianeblue

1. Zara Kimono Sleeve Top in Washed Blue. 2. Zara Combination Denim Top. 3. Zara Kimoni Sleeve Top in Blue. 4. Hawthorn Black Opticians Test Lens. 5. Becky Dockree Jewelry Spiral Orb Pendant. 6. Elena Canter Mosul Pendant.

S2E8: Diane, B&W

So often wearing pale pastels, it’s a relief to see Diane in a black and white outfit. Finally, she’s come to embrace the possibilities of the 1980s: oversized sweaters, monochrome palettes, and colorblocking. Compared to Carla’s overt bitterness, Diane’s hard edge can be hard to locate.

s2e8diane

Especially when she’s being an uptite little obsessive compuslive. Above, Diane points to her apron and delivers the following monologue:

“I had a small obsession myself until I got some help. I was obsessive compulsive about neatness. I demanded that everything be in its proper place. But now look at the laissez faire attitude I have about my apron. In the old days I would have insisted that it be pencil, pen, pencil, pen, pad. Well now it doesn’t matter if it’s pen, pencil, pen, pencil, pad, or pencil, pencil, pen, pen, pad, or even pencil, pen, pad, pencil, pen. But there’s one thing I cannot have and that’s this: pad, pen, pen, pencil, pencil. That’s just irritating.”

Below, Zara sets the (desaturated) tone:

s2e8dianewhite

1. Zara Captain Style T-Shirt. 2. Zara Combined Faux Leather T-Shirt. 3. Zara Tricolour Dress. 4. Neil Barrett Walnut Box Knit Pullover. 5. Tsumori Chisato Doll Cashmere Pullover. 6. Dusan Two Tone Sweater.

S2E8: Carla, Bandana Print

I haven’t worn a bandana since I built a Habitat for Humanity house in high school. And since that was over a decade ago, I’m feeling pretty bad about my philanthropic side right now. But enough about volunteering for good causes, right? Let’s distract ourselves by talking about buying overpriced clothes. And later on, when said clothes arrive in the mail, perhaps the guilt will inspire you to donate to a non-profit. (Cheers to Carla: Where Everybody Knows Your Charity’s Name?) But back to the point: It would never occur to me to wear a bandana print.

But Carla wore one:

s2e8carla

And thus, so shall we:

s2e8carlamod

1. Freak of Nature Hazzard County Dress in Bandana Print. 2. Will Leather Goods Bandana Carry All Canvas Tote Bag.  3. Ecote Quilted Bandana Backpack. 4. AG Adriano Goldschmied Legging Ankle Jeans in Navy Bandana Print. 5. Keds Champion Bandana Sneakers. 6. Fred Perry for the Amy Winehouse Foundation Bandana Print Shirt. 7. River Island Osprey Bandana Print Dungaree. 8. OBEY Dazed Front Knot Cropped Top in Bandana Print.

Fittingly, #6 comes the Fred Perry for the Amy Winehouse Foundation line. The Amy Winehouse Foundation has been set up in Amy’s memory to support charitable activities in both the UK and abroad that provide help, support or care for young people in need. In continued support of The Amy Winehouse FoundationFred Perry released a fitting tribute to the singer’s iconic style; a love of ‘50s Americana is seen across leopard print polo shirts, gingham check skirts and polo dresses, with royalties and fees from the collection donated to The Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Here’s to the union of good causes and buying clothes!

Chloe

S2E8: Carla, Hawaiian Prints (Again)

Having grown up on Kauai with a hula teacher mom and ukulele-collecting dad, I am a sucker for anything Hawaiian kitsch. So imagine my pleasure when Carla pulls out yet another Hawaiian print shirt in Season 2.

8.2

It’s a given that nothing beats a vintage Hawaiian shirt. But these aren’t too shabby:

S2: Diane, Pearls

Diane may have lost her sizeable inheritance and become a cocktail waitress, but she never lost her haughty airs. Wanting to look like an overeducated tennis-club-frequenting blue-blooded aristocrat, Diane’s jewelry of choice is, of course, a pearl necklace.

s2dianepearls

Now, I am not a Jew of the JAP (Jewish American Princess) variety. My car has a salvage title, my favorite clothes are from Salvation Army, and I haven’t had a manicure since I went to prom. Don’t get me wrong: I’m spoiled and I won’t take public transportation, I’m just not really a pearls kind of girl. I did receive a few sets of classic pearls for my Bat Mitzvah fifteen years ago, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never worn them. Here are a few more modern alternatives that I would wear. If I had to wear pearls.

We’ve seen what Carla and Diane were wearing in Episode 5 of Season 2. Now it’s Sam’s turn.

Nearly identical. Further proof that fashion is rarely new, mostly just recycled.

Here’s to changing the minds of skeptics who think Cheers’ fashion is outdated!

S2E5: Diane’s Little White Dress

If you recall from the Pilot: Diane Chambers post (or from the pilot episode itself), Diane first appeared at Cheers when she was quite literally dumped on the way to the altar by her fiance (and professor), Sumner Sloan. In Season 2, Episode 5, Sloan returns to try to win Diane back. Only by this point, she’s dating Sam Malone. Perhaps a not-so-subtle nod to the wedding that never took place, Diane wears a white dress.

s2e5diane

The pompous Sloan tries to convince Diane that she belongs more in his (highbrow) world than in Sam’s (lowbrow) bar. Ever loyal to her dream of getting rid of Diane for good, Carla offers to help:

Carla: Hey Sammy, how ’bout I throw the scuzzball outta here?
Sam: No, Diane would be furious.
Carla: I was talking about Diane.

That disco cut — flowy sleeves, cinched waist, full skirt — isn’t easy to find these days. And the ones that do exist aren’t exactly easy on your bank account. But here are a few modern-day options:

s2e5dianemod

1. Viktor & Rolf Crepe and Georgette Silk Dress. 2. J. Mendel Long Sleeve Dress. 3. L’Wren Scott Silk Chiffon and Crepe Dress. 4. Whistles Leyla Drawstring Dress. 5. Chloe Ruffle-Sleeve Grosgrain Dress. 6. Alice + Olivia Tavi Pintuck Dress.

S2E5: Carla, Colorblock Sweatshirt

The 1980s, a golden era for colorblocking. Case in point: Carla’s superb colorblock sweatshirt.

I believe that if Carla Tortelli were a character of today, and she had more than a 1980s cocktail waitress’ salary, that she’d be pretty into these sweatshirts:

S2E4: Gold Chains, Diane Chambers-Style

When I imagine someone wearing multiple “gold chains,” it’s not a dainty or delicate image. In fact, I mostly just imagine 2 Chainz. And he looks like this. But Diane Chambers knows how to feminize pretty much any accessory or article of clothing. (As opposed to Carla, who knows how to de-feminize pretty much everything).

s2e4diane

Reiss‘s Spring line of shirts includes two with a likeness to Diane’s. And here are a (price) range of gold(ish) mult-chain necklaces.

s2e4dianemod1. Reiss Jade Layered Shirt. 2. Reiss 1971 Delfine Dipped Back Top. 3. Forever 21 Ombré Snake Chain Necklace. 4. Guess Gold-Tone Slinky Chain Necklace. 5. Rosantica Multi-Strand Necklace.

S2E3: Finally, Diane’s First Good Outfit

Finally. It only took 25 episodes for Diane Chambers to wear a truly likeable outfit. No pastels, no ruffles, no lace, no silk, no puff sleeves, not even a pussy bow (a certified Man Repeller) in sight.

s2e3diane

Perhaps it can be attributed to the fact that in the finale of Season 1, Sam and Diane finally sealed the deal. Just a wee bit of sex with a man and Diane suddenly realized she wasn’t a virginal pilgrim, and could thus stop dressing like one. A chunky knit sweater, an a-line skirt, a tie belt, deep purples and reds, even a black purse. She let go of her anal-retentive stiffness and got dressed like a normal person. Finally.

S2E2: Carla in Menswear

Boyfriend jeans don’t look great on those of us with Carla Tortelli’s stature. We 5’3″-ers and below don’t need any help looking short by wearing oversized cuffed pants. Boyfriend shirts, on the other hand, are universally flattering.

s2e2carla

Maybe her sleazy ex-husband left it, maybe she found it in the bar’s lost & found. Either way, Carla’s men-at-work tee-shirt look fits her masculine (and emasculating) personality to a tee (pun intended).

S2: Diane x Madewell

Diane’s Season 2 uniform: demure knit sweaters, button-down shirts, below-the-knee skirts, all in a pale pastel palette. The eternal student and teacher’s pet, feminine yet completely un-sexy.

madewelldiane

Madewell’s Spring 2013 lookbook offers a contemporary take on the Diane uniform while sticking to its core components. The plus? Madewell has found a way to add a bit (a very teeny bit) of sex appeal to the nerdy schoolgirl look.

madewell

The best part is that Madewell is now carrying one of my favorite brands, Ace & Jig (dress second from left), which I first discovered at Mira Mira in San Francisco.

S1E20: Diane’s Ugliest Outfit Still a Winner

The beauty of interpretation is that even Diane Chambers’ ugliest outfit can be salvaged. Jump forward 30 years and a patterned blouse, green skirt, red necklace, and red purse can come together to make a nice version of something that was probably considered chic in its own time but now appears dowdy and outdated.

S1: Rugby Shirts

Like polo shirts, I thought rugby shirts had no place in my life. I’m the least athletic person I know. Asthma (Judaism) pretty much took care of that. But Sam Malone makes them look not half bad. And, like Carla and her Nike sneakers, Sam is a devoted Nike rugby shirt fan.

Sam’s Women: Mrs. Robinson

In Season 1, Episode 13, Sam is seduced by a confident and pushy talent agent more than several years his senior.

It isn’t easy to make a bobble knit sweater or a skirt suit look seductive, but the cougar manages just fine. So impressive are her skills, that Carla goes to her for advice:

Carla: Tell me something, Red. Are professional athletes better between the old Wamsuttas (a brand of sheets, I found out after a solid 10 minutes of Google research) than ordinary men?
Cougar: I’ve had no experience with ordinary men.
Carla: Oh me neither, but I’m trying to work my way up to one.

Carla Retort-elli

The best part of Cheers is Carla and Diane shooting disparaging one-liners at each other. Or, rather, Diane saying something innocent and Carla shooting back an inappropriate retort.

Diane: Last night I was up until two in the morning finishing off Kierkegaard.
Carla: I hope he thanked you for it.

Sam’s Women: The Blonde Bombshell

If you recall from the first Sam’s Women post about Season 1, Episode 2, Diane believes that Sam only dates big-breasted airheads. This is the blonde bombshell (in a cashmere sweater dress) that leads her to that conclusion:

samswomen2

Sam: Do you think there’s a chance you and I could go somewhere and laugh together?
Brandee (“with two e’s,” she said): My mother told me to watch out for guys in bars.
Sam: Well then let’s get out of this bar so you don’t have to work.

(Apparently that was a good line in 1982.)

What my mother always told me, wherever I was headed, and especially if I was wearing a dress, was to “bring a sweater.” Thus, the sweater dress:

In Honor of Valentine’s Day Part II: Maternity Wear, Carla-Style

Happy Valentine’s Day, all! Did you know that on average, 11,000 babies are conceived each year on Valentine’s Day? (That’s in part because of silly things like the lingerie featured in the last post). In honor of that, let’s take a look at Carla’s many maternity outfits.

When Cheers begins, Carla Tortelli has four children. By the end of the series, she has eight. The first pregnancy occurs in Season 1, when Carla is knocked up by her smarmy ex-husband Nick.

preg

Diane: Carla, I don’t think you should be engaging in strenuous activities when you are with child.
Carla: If I didn’t do things with child, I’d never leave the house. The only thing I ever did without child resulted in one.

Carla’s Nikes #1: White

Carla Tortelli always wears Nikes. First up to bat, white.

NIKES1

Disclaimer: I am neither a sneaker collector nor a Nike expert. While I will admit that I bought a pair of Nike dunks once in college “because all the cool kids were doing it,” I will also admit that every time I wore them I felt like the fraud I was.

Circa 2006 (dont judge):

184_587415367743_7028_n

Now that I have proven my utter lack of good Nike judgment, you can rest assured that the following research on Carla’s Nikes comes from a few more habitual sneaker wearers who have kindly lent their expert opinion.

If you are looking for a modern alternative, scroll down. If you would like to get your hands on a pair of Nikes just like Carla’s, your best bet will be Ebay, Etsy, and other sneaker nerd sites that I know nothing about. Remember, these could be from any year before 1982. Here are a few keywords you can search to find styles similar to Carla’s:

Nike Oceania
Nike Cortez
Nike Waffle Trainer or Racer (sometimes mistaken for the Cortez)
Nike Electra
Nike Diablo
Nike Montreal Racers
Nike Rio
Nike Mieka
Nike Long Jump II

And finally, some new white sneakers:

Diane Chambers De-Girlified

As you can see from the last few posts about Diane (Valentine’s Day, Pilgrim Shirts, and Sweaters), her wardrobe is often an explosion of ineffectual femininity: pastel pinks and purples (the weakest colors on the wheel), kitten heels (the most useless type of heel there is), sweater vests (I honestly don’t remember the last time I saw a woman wearing a sweater vest), and pussy bow blouses (the name is so vile I can’t even bring myself to say it out loud). She might as well be wearing hearts and rainbows and unicorns and actual vaginas on her person. I don’t even want to find modern alternatives.

s1e7dianevests

However, when Diane deviates from the safety of her cable knits, as with her oft-repeated go-to of silk shirts paired with vests, it is easy to imagine a less girly version. A touch of masculinity could go a long way for Diane. (Then again, a touch of femininity could do wonders for dear old Carla.) Diane Chambers, de-girlified:

In Honor of the Grammys

In honor of tonight’s 55th annual Grammy Awards, I nominate Gary Portnoy’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” as the best tv show theme song in history.

From Cheers’ opening credits:

And from NBC 75th Anniversary party in 2002 (20 years after Cheers’ premiere!), here’s Martin Short, Will Ferrell, and Eric McCormack singing the theme song, with the whole Cheers gang in the audience! (Oh, I just want to hug Rhea Perlman!)

Sam’s Women: The Ex-Wife

This is the first installation of what I have named the “Sam’s Women” series. Coincidentally, when I went back to find out which episode his ex-wife appeared in, it turns out Season 1, Episode 2 was actually called “Sam’s Women.” True story.

If you don’t know, Sam “Mayday” Malone is the owner of the Cheers bar and an ex-Red Sox relief pitcher. But those two titles pale in comparison to his status as a busy Boston bachelor. Woman after woman, he is cheered on by all his Cheers regulars and staff except for Diane, who is, against her own will, in love with him. In this episode, Diane believes that Sam only dates big-breasted airheads, so Sam tries to prove he can date intelligent women by asking his ex-wife to pretend they went to a play. A clip:

Sam’s ex-wife:

You might think that turquoise and pink dip-dye ombré effects and flutter-sleeve dresses would not exist today in any form you’d want to wear. But you might be wrong:

Season 1: Diane’s Sweaters

Carla vs. Diane, the priss vs. the tomboy, the beanpole blonde vs. the pocket-size brunette. If I had to choose one of their wardrobes, I would not hesitate to choose Carla’s. But Diane is adorable in her own way. Like a toy poodle. Or a baby giraffe. Here is her collection of sweaters (and sweater vests, blah) from Season 1:

s1dianesweaters

And a few updated versions (some with mock sweater-vests, to boot!):

And last but not least, the Gudrun & Gudrun Faroe Jumper from Plumo, another gem I was introduced to by Anne Sage of The City Sage.

S1: Diane, the Pilgrim

Throughout Season 1, Diane Chambers insists on wearing an assortment of ridiculous high-collar puff-sleeve blouses that magnify her prudishness and pretension to Pilgrim-ish heights. Of course, toting a Carl Jung book around doesn’t help her cause, either.

s1dianepilgrim

Today, I show modern alternatives to Diane’s collection of pilgrim shirts.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I would actually wear one of these. (My people – the Jews, if that isn’t clear by now – didn’t exactly land on Plymouth Rock, plus, regardless of my immigrant heritage, my neck is too short for a high collar.) Nor am I necessarily suggesting that you wear one, either. Rather, this post is for the skeptical who still believe that the outfits on Cheers are unfashionable, outdated, or just plain ugly. Tell that to the globe’s leading fashion houses.

Fendi and Gucci and Dolce, oh my!

S1E8 (follow-up 2): Carla, Fire Truck Red, & A Truce is Called

In Part III of Season 1, Episode 8, Sam forces Carla to spend an evening with Diane to see if they can make amends. Two things happen. 1) Carla gets Diane drunk and makes a fool of her (but eventually they see eye-to-eye and call a truce…for the time being). 2) Carla wears another fantastic outfit.

s1e8carlared

According to Pantone, those pants would be considered “Fire Truck Red,” or in Carla’s case, the color of rage. Thanks to Band of Outsiders, Current/Elliott, Keds, Madewell, A.L.C., and Carven, there are plenty of reds raging in today’s newest lines:

1. Boy by Band of Outsiders Easy Shirt.  2. Keds x Madewell Sungarden Sneakers.  3. Current/Elliott Skinny Trouser.  4. Eileen Fisher ‘Step’ Oxford.  5. A.L.C. Relaxed Trousers. Far right: preview of Carven’s Summer ’13 line.

Here’s to making peace with your enemies (especially if that enemy is the color red)!

S1E8 (follow-up): The Fight

A follow-up to the last post: It’s no secret that there was no love lost between Carla Tortelli and Diane Chambers. Name-calling, verbal spats, and practical jokes were a common occurrence between the two close-knit enemies. But on the day that Carla wore that perfect geometric tee, things got physical.

It started innocently enough:

Carla: Listen, Pencil-Neck, you’re startin’ to get on my nerves.
Diane: Please don’t call me Pencil-Neck. I am not a pencil-neck.
Carla: I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to call you Pencil-Neck, Gozzle-Head.
Diane: Name-calling. The last refuge of the mono-syllabic.
Carla: I don’t know what that means but I heard “slob” in there.

But later on, more insults were exchanged and tensions heightened:

Carla: You wanna be my friend? Let your hair down!
Diane: How about I take your hair and scour the sink with it?
Carla: Is that a brillo shot?
Diane: Only if it offends you.
Carla: You sound like a lady who is getting tired of her teeth!
Diane: I’m tired of your teeth and all the vermicelli in between!

And thus…

At no more than five feet tall, the little spitfire, the beloved namesake of this blog, Carla had to be restrained. Gotta love her!

S1E8: Carla, Geometric Prints, Mary Meyer Clothing

On rare occasions we are privileged enough to catch a glimpse of Carla Tortelli’s shoes (always Nike, always color-coordinated with her outfit). But the rest of the time, our view is frustratingly obstructed. Either wearing an apron or standing behind the bar, Carla is relegated mostly to waist-up shots. So she makes sure to always wear a killer shirt. Case in point, this geometric gem:

s1e8carla

The most consistent modern alternative is Brooklyn (via Northern California) designer Mary Meyer, whose line of equally killer geometric-print clothing I was introduced to at Mira Mira in San Francisco.

S1E7: Carla, Striped Sweater

s1e7carla

One of the many reasons I love Carla so much is that I relate to her misanthropic attitude toward’s life’s many frivolities. For example, that is exactly the face I would be making if I had to hold up a limbo stick at a toga party too.

S1E6: Carla, Dual Stripes

Season 1, Episode 6. Carla is wearing one of the most incredible shirts ever. Maybe that’s a bit hyperbolic but, it’s good. Real good:

s1e6carla

Dual stripes! And if you notice her right shoulder in the top photo, you can see that the back of the shirt is the opposite–AMAZING. I don’t know anything about football, and am eternally grateful that I will be on an airplane during the Super Bowl and its ensuing hysteria (read: rioting) in San Francisco, but admittedly, she looks almost like a (very well-dressed) referee. So I say, reluctantly, Go 49ers?

I thought this look would be impossible to replicate. Thankfully, ASOS, Antipodium, and House of Holland see the merit in mixed stripe patterns:

s1e6carlamod

1. ASOS Top with Spots and Stripes.  2. House of Holland V Stripe Oversized T-Shirt.  3. Antipodium Syntax T-Shirt in Patchwork Stripe.  4. Nasty Gal Straight Up Blouse.  5. Antipodium Syntax Striped Tee.  6. Marni Stripe Shopping Bag.  7. ASOS Shirt in Cutabout Stripe Print.  8. Theory ‘Caslyn’ Cotton Skort.  9. House of Holland Striped Denim Skirt.  10. Marni Stripe Silk Twill Top.

And yes, that’s a skort on the bottom left. Like most trends of the 80s and 90s, I am a proponent of bringing them back. Clearly.

Here’s to dual stripes. And the 49ers. I guess.

Cheers,

Chloe

S1E5: Carla, Pastels

I know nothing of Easter. Being Jewish, I thought pastels were off the table. But Carla has inspired me to reconsider. Sure, Carla Tortelli is a Catholic Italian, but Rhea Perlman’s innate Jewishness shines through her spitfire character. It’s probably half the reason I love Carla so much.

S1E3, Carla: Part III

A friend just asked me, “Are you really taking hideous Cheers outfits and having a modern alternative involving Lanvin, Chloe, Hermes etc?” My answer: Firstly, I am sure that when these episodes aired, the characters were donning only the hippest brand name clothes of their era, as characters on hit shows tend to do. (Since their costume designer is probably 90 years old, I haven’t sought them out to ask, though I should). Secondly, if Lanvin, Chloe, and Hermes are making similar versions, the originals can’t be that all that bad, now can they? In fact the originals, at least Diane’s, probably were Lanvin, Chloe, and Hermes. Thirdly, they are not hideous outfits, they’re the best outfits, period. Which brings me to one of my favorites, Blue on Blue:

s1e3carla2 copy

Blue button-ups have had a bit of a makeover in the course of 30 years; Acne and Equipment make my favorites. Based on the color and cut of Carla’s jeans, I would think they were Wranglers (though my mom insists Girbaud was the leading brand in 1982). Turns out Wrangler still makes a nice indigo wash jean, as does Reiss (You know it’s the right era when the jean is called “Farrah.” I swear I don’t try to make these things rhyme.), and Imogene & Willie, a brand I was turned on to by Anne Sage, who called them a “Denim Game-Changer.” They say the Elizabeth jean “sits higher on the waist for new-meets-old-fashioned feel.” Sounds like they heard my plea. And finally, the feet. It drives me crazy that we rarely get to see Carla’s shoes, so I just had to use my imagination.

Here’s to those of us who can see past the cut to the style beneath!

S1E3: Carla, Part II

Both Carla Tortelli and Diane Chambers sport a wide variety of hair accessories throughout the many seasons of Cheers, but this is probably the most memorable:

s1e3 carla hair

I searched high and low for a star barrette that isn’t cheesy and it wasn’t easy (unlike that rhyme, which was both). Three options. 1) For a mere $640, Rodarte’s gorgeous star barrette could feed a village. 2) For $18, Catbird’s Giant Dwarf Silver SParkler Star Bobby Pins seem like a deal (In comparison, that is. I haven’t bought a barrette since I was four, so I was still under the impression that they’re supposed to cost $2 at most.). 3) Thanks to Glitter Mint’s DIY version of Rodarte’s celestial hair pin, you can probably achieve the look for under $10. Plus you get to use a hot-glue gun. Win-win.

S1E3: Carla, Part I

Well, we’ve made it to Episode 3, where I really started to notice just how incredible Carla’s clothes are. It’s very rare that we get to see a full body shot of Carla (she’s usually busy slinging drinks and insults), but when we do, it’s golden. Case in point: this belted rust-colored denim/multicolor-striped-tee/casual sneakers gem.

s1e3carla

I’ll get to Carla’s (well-curated collection of) hair clips and (well-curated collection of) Nikes eventually but for now these modern alternatives do the trick:

S1E2: Polo Shirts

s1e2carla

I used to hate polo shirts. For reasons aesthetic (they simply look too preppy), ancestral (members of my tribe haven’t exactly been welcomed into country clubs), and practical (I don’t even know how to ride a horse).

But then I found an old Lacoste polo at the thrift store (similar to Carla’s above). And truth be told, I like it. Why? It’s a toss-up. Either because it only cost a dollar, or perhaps because it is beat up, thinning, riddled with holes, and a men’s. And as a rule, vintage is almost always better than new, men’s shirts almost always better than women’s.

However, upon some heavy polo research (because of an accidental Wikipedia click I now know all the rules to the sport), it turns out there are a bevy of designers out there not only making new polo shirts for women, but breaking the mold and redefining what a polo shirt is. Whether patterned, textured, deconstructed, modern, or reimagined, these 16 polos will make you do a double-take. (Kind of like seeing a Jew at a country club.)

s1e2carlamod

1. MM6 by Maison Martin Margiela polo.  2. Carven paisley print polo.  3. Leon & Harper polo in grey.  4. Lacoste L!VE half sleeve jersey striped polo in azurite blue. 5. Stella McCartney polo in antique rose.  11. Hermes Vintage polo.  12. Leon & Harper polo in yellow floral.  13. Jil Sander navy stretch knit polo.  14. Jean Paul Gaultier fuzzi print tulle polo.  15. Antipodium sporting chance perforated polo.  16. Mossoni short sleeve polo in blue white.

And isn’t it JUST like Carla to make me rethink a lifetime’s ban of polos?

Pilot: Diane Chambers

In the pilot episode of Cheers, Diane Chambers quickly transforms from a pretentious tightly-wound blue-blooded grad student about to marry her professor into a (pretentious tightly-wound blue-blooded) jilted barmaid. This is illustrated by a major transformation in her clothes.

See exhibit A:

s1e1diane

From sipping a martini to taking beer orders in an apron, Diane always maintains an air of sophistication, albeit pompous. With almost identical blouses and skirts, plus an overabundance of plaid, available today, it’s easy to achieve Diane’s highs and lows.

Pilot: Carla Tortelli

Image

Alright, alright. So Carla Tortelli’s outfit in the 1982 pilot episode of Cheers isn’t the best example of her sharp style. But if you can look past the (brillo pad) haircut and unfortunate (mom pant) pleats, this can be easily reimagined as a cute modern outfit. The bones are all there: a chunky oversized knit sweater, an embellished red tee tucked into high waisted colored denim, and a skinny black belt. Update the proportions and it doesn’t feel like the 1982 recession is just beginning. It feels more like, well, the current recession.

Cheers to Carla

How it all began

In the fall of 2012, I moved into my first studio apartment. Then I got sick. I had never lived alone and now I had the flu, to boot. After exhausting all reasonable Netflix options, I turned to Cheers. It was a revelation.

Cheers aired its pilot episode three years before I was born and went off the air when I was in 3rd grade. But, no matter. Rhea Perlman’s character Carla Tortelli, with her keen sense of style (read: high-waisted jeans, color-coordinated Nikes and barrettes, and animal-print sweaters), has become, 30 years after her inception, my fashion guru.

This blog charts the outfits of Cheers’ main characters (with an emphasis on dear Carla, of course), from its pilot episode in 1982 to its finale in 1993. It also points you in the right direction for achieving a modern take on the looks of these underrated fashion icons.

Here’s to Carla!

Cheers,

Chloe
